The lottery Summary:
All of the villagers of a small town gather on June 27 for the lottery. In this town there are only 300 inhabitants, on this day children go to pick stones and put them in a pile in a square, and then the man so the same and finally the woman do that too. Mr. Summers is the one who is in charge of running the lottery, because he is the most experienced one, and he has done many things for the town. He arrives with the black box, which is a box in which the names are placed before the lottery. The traditional box was lost many years ago, so that is why they use this box, he wants this box to be changed but the villagers want the tradition to remain intact. He convinced the villagers to change the wood tiles for simple papers with the names of everyone.
The first thing that happens in the lottery is that the names are placed in the box and locked inside. Then they call all of the families to see if everyone is present. Mrs. Hutchinson arrives late to the lottery because she forgot. They take roll and the only one missing is Dunbar, but Mrs. Dunbar will draw instead. Mr. Summers reminds the town of the rules, he will read the names and the heads of the families have to come up and draw a slip of paper, and they are not allowed to look at it.
Mr. summer finishes calling the names and then they are allowed to open the papers. Everyone starts saying that Bill Hutchinson has it. Jessie argues that it wasn’t fair because Bill had not enough time to pick a slip. Mr. Summer asks Bill how many members are there in the family. Bill says that there are five members in the family, so following the procedure, each member of the family has to go pick a slip again. Each member goes and pick a slip again, Tessie takes the slip with the dot. Mr. Summers instructs the village to hurry up, the town runs towards the piles of rocks and Jessie screams that it is unfair. Then everyone starts throwing rocks at her until she is dead.
